Windows Phone 8.1 users can now get to things a bit easier, as Microsoft has released Files, an official file management app. It doesn’t create a bold new type of app, it brings the mobile phone system closer in line with its desktop big brother. The 1.0 version app itself is fairly basic, but will give users access to individual files and not require them to enter apps in order to access and organize them. This includes files stored on both the hard drive as well as files stored on microSD cards.

In a post on the official Windows Phone blog by Brandon LeBlanc, Senior Marketing Communications Manager on the Marketing Group at Microsoft, stated that the team has “heard your feedback loud and clear” regarding the need for an easier file manager.

Announced in a Reddit AMA last month in early May 2014, Files marks the continued trend of Windows Phone 8.1 to drive down feature parity with other systems such as iOS and Android. This includes the recently announced Cortana personal assistant system, whose name is coined from the character of Microsoft’s popular Halo series of games.

File is available for free on the Windows Phone Store.
