A Challenger Approaches: New SSB4 Characters Unveiled

Super Smash Bros 4

This past weekend saw the first Super Smash Brothers: Melee Invitational at EVO 2014, and fans of the series were even treated to a special message from Nintendo of America’s Reggie Fils-Aimé, but Super Smash Brothers franchise continues to reign in the news today with the reveal of 3 new characters that have been added to the roster of the highly anticipated Super Smash Brothers WiiU/3DS.

The three new characters were revealed in the same fashion as the previous announcements: a video was posted to the Super Smash Bros. YouTube channel and the most recent unveiled series veteran Captain Falcon, as well as Lucina and Robin, the latter two being stars of the highly acclaimed 3DS game, Fire Emblem: Awakening.

As for the combat debuted in the trailer, Captain Falcon was shown to retain the majority of his move set, focusing on hand to hand combat and powerful kicks as well as his famous “Falcon Punch!” while Lucina was shown to have a move set that shows off her sword-wielding skills. Fans of the series will note that her move set is very reminiscent of those of Marth and Ike, two of the previous playable Fire Emblem characters, who also appear in a brief scene in the trailer to do battle against the new characters.

Robin, a tactician, wields a sword as well, but his strength comes from his multiple tomes, which he can use to blast his foes with fire, lighting, wind, and even dark magic. Players can also choose between the male or female Robin, a nod to Fire Emblem: Awakening, where the character’s gender is also a choice the player makes.

Awakening’s Chrom is also included in the trailer, so fans of the prince worry not. However, he is not included as a playable character, but is a part of Robin’s Final Smash finishing move, featured at the end of the trailer.

With the addition of these 3 new characters, the roster of Super Smash Brothers WiiU/3DS is brought up to a total of 36, including fellow newcomers Greninja, Mega Man, and Pac-Man.

Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS releases on October 3, 2014, while the WiiU version will be released sometime during the holiday season 2014.
