Resident Evil 2 Reborn, the fan-made HD remake of Resident Evil 2 by Invader Games, has ceased development. The announcement came in a post on their official Facebook page.

Capcom, the rights holder to the series, announced last week that they would be developing their own HD remake in response to fan prompting. The company had put out messages on Facebook in early July asking fans for their thoughts on Invader Games’ creation and weather fans would prefer an official remake.

Invader games appears to be happy with Capcom’s announcement, which prompted them to cease development. “Nobody could bring back to life the masterpiece of 1998 better than the creators themselves,” the Italy-based company said in their announcement. They also stated they had been in contact with Capcom, who had reached out to them before last week’s announcement. The team from Invader has also been invited to meet with Capcom and “discuss further ideas”.

At the time it was shut down, Resident Evil 2 Reborn was being developed on the Unreal Engine 4. The title was originally announced in December of 2013, with the screenshots released the next month. The team had been planning to release an alpha version of the game this summer before the change. The company had also received a cease-and-desist letter from Capcom in January 2014. At the time, this was specifically regarding the donation option listed on their website which allowed fans to help fund the development.

The developer has one other game listed on their website, a psychological horror titled The Hardest Choice. It is in development for Unity Engine and Unreal Engine 4. The beta for the Unity version is currently available for download. When asked about the status of the Unreal version, which is listed for Summer 2015 release, the developer told CommonGeek they are “still working on it” and confirmed a delayed timeline.

As of this report, Invader Games’ website still lists Resident Evil 2 Reborn under “In development projects”.
