Entertainment Weekly has revealed the first official photo of the new Power Rangers suits. The article also revealed new plot details about the movie’s take on the Rangers’ suits.
The article describes the new suits as “translucent extraterrestrial armor that crystallizes around their bodies”. The alien armor is a new plot developed for the film.
In the original series the teens were given power coins by the wizard Zordon that allowed them access to “the morphing grid”. The morphing grid gave them their suits and enhanced abilities. So far there has been no mention of Zordon or mentor-like character for the film.
“It’s tricky finding a new language for a superhero costume,” production designer Andrew Menzies told EW about the new looks. “Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made. You can’t win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans.”
“The show was about kids coming of age, about metamorphosis,” director Dean Israelite says of the change. “These suits needed to feel like they were catalyzed by these kids and their energy, their spirit.”
The suits are different from the original series’ costumes, which boasted bright colors and spandex. The new suits have a darker color scheme with a grey secondary color rather than the series’ traditional white coloring. The also have a much sleeker design, very similar to the new look for Elizabeth Banks’ Rita Repulsa. Banks previously has said that the villain will have a new backstory that connects her to the Rangers so it is possible the looks are meant to be similar.
The Rangers themselves are excited about the new suits. “It’s the coolest costume ever,” Becky G, one of the film’s stars, says. “I’m gonna wear it for Halloween for, like, five years.” Power Rangers will be the singer’s film debut, she will portray Trini, the Yellow Ranger. It will also be the film debut of Dacre Montgomery, who is playing Red Ranger Jason.
Actress Naomi Scott will play Kimberly, the Pink Ranger. Scott’s previous credits include Fox’s Terra Nova and Disney Channel’s Lemonade Mouth. The cast is rounded out with Ludi Lin as Black Ranger Zack and Me and Earl and The Dying Girl actor RJ Cyler as Blue Ranger Billy.
Power Rangers is currently filming and set for a March 24, 2017 release date. The series’ 22nd season, Power Rangers Super Dino Charge is currently airing on Nickelodeon.
