Battlefield 1

Battlefield 1 looks good. It definitely shows what DICE learned from making that cut down Star Wars game. The design language feels minimalist and refined, with the spawn screen using a very smooth real time transition into the battlefield. The gunplay, if only limited to iron sights and a highly experimental period list of weapons, seems like it keeps the franchise’s best. The graphics seem mostly the same.

However, BF4 was one of the worst launches in recent gaming history. Will this year be a repeat? Guesses point to no, considering that Hardline and Battlefront didn’t have this issue. The main war set pieces such as the blimp and train should be similar to how Titans worked in 2142, though expect to see chaos on reddit if they function like the AC-130 did in 3 and 4.

EA hosted a livestream of a 64 man match to showcase the multiplayer gameplay while Snoop Dogg alluded to smoking out most of the celebrities there.

Overall, there’s enough confidence in the air that this game won’t have a downgrade or issue with a buggy frostbite engine (though that’s half the fun).

Star Wars

Not much here, but the X Wing VR Mission looks like an easy win if it’s done right. Perhaps the chances of a Rogue Squadron reboot have gone up now? Viceral’s game looks pretty, and that’s all we got.

Titanfall 2

Most people took 2014’s Ex-COD developer Respawn Entertainment’s title as a shallow, but engaging experience, with the community being fractured by the map packs and a weak progression system.

But there is potential. There’s never been more freedom of movement in a first person shooter before. Titanfall could be its own Halo CE: If it was done a few years ago by a smaller developer, then sure, people would have seen it as an indie darling like Insurgency.

Titanfall doubles the mechs, for starters. They also showcased a grapple ripped straight out of Attack on Titan.. The grapple might disturb the harmony  felt with its predecessor’s movement, but the trailer makes it look promising and the developers have confirmed that it’s a perk/class option. The trailer was light on details, but it looks like a lot has changed.

The changes seem more of a clean slate instead of just added depth. It’s uncertain of how the MOBA-esque framing of the types of Titans will play out, but it also releases amid October’s chaos.

Fe

Here’s an indie art game to offset all of the murder Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2 made. Not really, but the visual style is appealing and very, very bleak at times. Promising, nonetheless.

Mass Effect: Andromeda

EA seems more into adding more specific, solid updates to this sports franchise. The increased size UI and the more specific controls appear to add depth, and it applies to the offensive and defensive aspects of the game.

Fifa 17

Looks like an excellent update to the series. It looks like the decision to use Frostbite was well done, and the story mode sounds kinda fun, and it’s something completely new for the series. Otherwise, looks like better FIFA in every way.
